The Quick Take

Meet Savannah, an aspiring writer who meets bestselling author Bennett Bryson and pretty quickly finds herself swept into his world. There’s a dead first wife, a secluded house, a husband who starts becoming increasingly controlling, things Savannah isn't supposed to know and basically all the ingredients that make me think, 'well, obviously I'm going to keep reading'.

Okay, this is one of those books where I’m going to say I liked it...but.

Promise Me Never follows Savannah, an aspiring writer who meets bestselling author Bennett Bryson and pretty quickly finds herself swept into his world. There’s a dead first wife, a secluded house, a husband who starts becoming increasingly controlling, things Savannah isn't supposed to know and basically all the ingredients that make me think, 'well, obviously I'm going to keep reading'.

And I did.

This was a really fast read. Not just the amount of words and pages, but even short on words on pages. It kept me entertained, the chapters moved quickly, and I definitely wanted to see how everything was going to play out.

But here's my issue: I pretty much knew where we were going.

I kept waiting for that moment when I was going to get the rug pulled out from under me and make me question everything.

It never really came.

And then we get close to the end and things finally start building. I'm thinking, Okay, here we go. This is about to get good.

And then...

We skip ahead.

😂

Suddenly we're in the future, the mystery is basically solved, and I'm sitting there thinking, Wait. That's it? Did I accidentally skip a chapter?

I didn't.

It was just kind of a strange way to wrap things up after spending the whole book getting us there. I wanted to stay in that messy part a little longer and actually experience the payoff.

But, I was still entertained.

I read it quickly. I wanted to know what happened. I didn't consider abandoning it halfway through. And sometimes that's really all I need from a book.

Was I shocked? No.

Did I predict too much of it? Yep.

Am I slightly annoyed that we basically fast-forwarded through the part I'd been waiting for? Also yep. 😂

But did I have fun reading it? I did.

So if you're looking for something quick and twisty that doesn't require a ton of emotional investment, throw this one in your bag for a weekend away, a lazy Sunday, or one of those nights when you tell yourself you're going to read one chapter and suddenly it's way past your bedtime.
